Dean's Welcome

Dean’s Welcome

Welcome to the School of Continuing and Distance Education.

We are a School of research, teaching and provider of extension services in continuing and distance education.

Our passion is to become a center of excellence in research on technology-mediated learning and continuing education in the sub-region. This will lead us to emerge as the center of excellence in e-learning.

We have a unique history in the University of Ghana. The School preceded the establishment of the then University College to provide extra-mural studies to the growing adult population in the country. We have thus evolved from Department of Extra-Mural Studies, Institute of Public Education, Institute of Adult Education, and Institute of Continuing and Distance Education to School of Continuing and Distance Education.

The School has three units. These include the Department of Adult Education and Human Resource Studies, Department of Distance Education and the University of Ghana Learning Centres. Department of Adult Education and Human Resource Studies offers diploma, bachelors, masters and doctoral programmes in Adult Education and Human Resource Studies. Department of Distance Education oversees the delivery of distance learning programmes at the University of Ghana. The University of Ghana Learning Centres is the driver of research and represents the university in the regions of Ghana.

One of our flagship programmes is the Annual New Year School and Conference which has been organised for the past 72 years. This is a platform for the adult population to discuss issues of national interest and present a communique to direct national policy.

The current focus of the School is to research and publish in continuing education and distance learning. We intend to expand our focus to establish a youth development unit and also promote the teaching of distance education and educational technologies as a discipline at both the undergraduate and post graduate levels. Research is our passion. Our teaching and extension activities should be informed and directed by our research output. Thus, that is what we aim at achieving.

Welcome to our School and make the best use of our research, teaching and extension activities.
