When Mr. Akaba first joined the University in January 2006 as a Cleaner at the then Institute of Adult Education, few could have imagined the path he would walk. With humility as his compass and hard work as his guide, he quickly proved himself to be more than his job title.
By 2012, he was promoted to Conservancy Labourer, and in 2015, to Senior Conservancy Labourer at the School of Continuing and Distance Education (SCDE). Eventually, he rose to the position of Head Conservancy Labourer, a role that not only recognized his diligence but also his ability to lead with respect and kindness.
What defined Mr. Akaba’s career was not just the positions he held, but the relationships he built. Colleagues recall his warm presence, steady commitment, and willingness to lend a helping hand. He became a trusted figure in SCDE, admired for his integrity and consistency.
On August 29, 2025, the School held a send-off in his honour. Surrounded by colleagues and friends, he was celebrated with laughter, gratitude, and a special gift to mark his service.
Among his fondest memories is a story that beautifully captures the arc of his career. When he first applied for the Cleaner position in 2006, one of the panel members who interviewed him was Prof. Olivia A.T.F. Kwapong. Nearly 20 years later, he felt honoured that she was the one who sent him off to retirement, a memory that fills him with happiness.
In his farewell remarks, Mr. Akaba expressed deep appreciation to all staff of SCDE for their love, support, and kindness throughout his journey. He emphasized how much he valued the cordial working relationships that made his years of service fulfilling and meaningful.
As he begins his retirement, SCDE and the University community celebrate Mr. Akaba for his loyalty and dedication. His story will continue to inspire both staff and students alike.
