The School of Continuing and Distance Education (SCDE) under the College of Education has carved a niche for itself in Continuing and Distance Learning as the premier in adult and distance education in Ghana. The School has always strived to provide effective teaching and learning and increase enrolment of students to stay ahead of its competitors. In fulfilling such a mandate, the SCDE organized a faculty conference on 29th August 2023. It was attended by faculty of the School including the Coordinators from the eleven (11) Learning Centres. The Provost and College Secretary for the College of Education, the Dean of SCDE, and other Administrative Senior Members were also present.

In her opening remarks, the Dean of SCDE, Prof. Olivia A.T F Kwapong, encouraged faculty to work harder for promotions. She prides herself in seeing her faculty excel. According to her, the Conference apart from giving first-hand information on the status of departments and learning centres, will promote team spirit.

She was optimistic that with commitment from faculty, the School will become a centre of attraction in continous and distance learning.

All Heads of Department (HODs) and Learning Centre Coordinators took turns to give presentations on activities carried out in their Units within last academic year. The HODs presented on newly developed courses, accreditation as well as reaccredited of programmes, development of course sites and training of faculty to be able to use the course sites developed. One prevalent issue was the poor infrastructure at the various Learning Centres and the lack of some pertinent logistics for their operations.

The Executive Director of the Annual New Year School and Conference reported on the 74th School and took the gathering through plans put in place for the 75th School.
Addressing the faculty, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, Provost of the College of Education, encouraged all Centre Coordinators to consider ways of making the Centres sustainable through revenue generation. He was thrilled to have met with them, adding that it was a long-awaited opportunity.
The College Secretary, Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah applauded the Dean for the many promotions’ faculty had garnered under her leadership. He believed the conference was timely since the College needs to know the challenges of the Learning Centres so the College could take steps to improve the conditions of the Centres to become competitive in their respective Regions.
In her closing remarks, the Dean acknowledged a Team of faculty she had put together with the mandate of working to develop new courses and programmes which would be going through accreditation soon. She also indicated that next year’s conference would be bigger and better.
